Water Pressure Problems
Is your bathroom sink, bathtub or kitchen faucet not running as it should? Is water slow to come out, or not coming out in the streams it should? If your water is slow to run or not running at all, your home or office could be suffering from a case of low water pressure. Low water pressure can be a real nuisance and time-waster—the shower can slow to a trickle, the dishes won’t be washed, and you can spend hours doing something that should take minutes to do. Don’t throw away time and energy hoping the problem will fix itself. The first thing you should do is take proactive action and try to determine the cause of the problem.
Is It an Overreaching Problem?
If you’ve just purchased a new house or moved into a new office, you may not be familiar with the “lay of the land.” It is possible that the low water pressure is a neighborhood problem. Speak to neighbors to find out whether the issue is one others are suffering from, as well. If they are, the solution is simple: installing a water pressure booster, which increases the pressure of the water coming from the main line to your house.
Water Pressure Reducing Valves
If your neighbors have normal water and pressure and you don’t, you may have a water pressure reducing valve. Such valves, by limiting the amount of water used from the main supply line, are designed to encourage less water use. If you have such a valve, a plumber can easily adjust the setting of the valve so as to release greater water flow.
Temperature-Specific Pressure
If you experience low pressure only when you try to use hot water, the problem is likely from your water heater. Only a plumber can properly evaluate your water heater and determine how to fix the problem.
Fixture-Specific Flow
Your low water pressure might be the fault of a poor nozzle, clogged nozzle, or low-quality fixture. First, unscrew the nozzle and check if it has any signs of build-up. Try cleaning the fixture by soaking it in a water-vinegar solution. If it’s too corroded, your best bet is to invest in a new fixture. If that still doesn’t fix the problem, your issue might be one with the line to the sink. Clogging in such areas are especially common in older homes or buildings with galvanized pipelines (pipes which easily accumulate mineral deposits over a long period of time). If it’s a sink issue, the only solution is to call a plumber.
